Castle Rock ‘n’ Rollers Gear Up for Hard Hitting, Fast Skating and Big Giving in 2010
Castle Rock, Colorado’s own Castle Rock ‘n’ Rollers—the all-female flat track roller derby league established in 2008—are on the lookout for new recruits as they gear up for the 2010 season. Founded by local hairdresser and mother of four Pinki Flowers—her bout name—the team is made up of successful businesswomen, students, wives and mothers of all ages and backgrounds. By day, the women of the Rock ‘n’ Rollers work as area teachers, realtors, stay-at-home mothers, business managers and insurance company executives. But on bout nights, they don skates and pads and hit the rink—and their opponents—under names like Shell I. Whoopya, Dyan TaHurtya and D’Stroyer.
That hitting is real. Make no mistake, roller derby is a sport—and a tough one. It takes speed, strength, endurance and agility. All the women of the Castle Rock ‘n’ Rollers had to pass try-outs, demonstrating the ability to skate five laps in one minute, 20 laps in five minutes, block opponents, execute safe falls and slides on one and both knees, as well as perform 180-degree turns on one knee.
The Castle Rock ‘n’ Rollers work equally as hard promoting camaraderie between the team and the community. In just two years, they have grown into a tight-knit and supportive part of Castle Rock.
“It’s totally all about family,” Flowers says. “You become sisters with all the women in the league. We have the most dedicated, passionate roller derby girls around. I have been on a few different teams and it’s absolutely amazing—the love that we have for derby and each other. We’re a team.”
“Even though we’re tough out on the rink, we’re really passionate about our community,” adds team co-founder Whoopya. “We love Castle Rock.”
The Castle Rock ‘n’ Rollers demonstrate that love of Castle Rock through giving—both time and money. All team members are required to volunteer locally, and proceeds from the bouts are donated to area organizations, including the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center.
“We not only want to be entertainment for the community,” says Rock ‘n’ Roller L’No LowKO. “We want to be a resource for everyone in the community as well. So come out and see us!”
